Sigmoid diverticulitis (diverticulosis)Sigmoid diverticulitis in the acute form is the result of an inflammation of a "pocket" or divertuculum that can lead to perforation or other complications. Symptoms are usually fever and pain in the lower left quadrant of the abdomen. It is also common with leukocytosis. Diverticulitis diet (also for diverticulosis)Diverticulitis diet can be necessary to treat sigmoid diverticulosis which is mainly a western disease. In rural parts of developing countries, the occurence of diverticulosis is much less due to a higher rate of fiber in the food, such as unprocessed grains. Although not proven in full, this suggests benefits from an increased fiber diet might be preventive to sigmoid diverticulosis. Of course we already know it is good for you in other respects, such as less risk of hemorrhoids (hemroids) or irritable bowel syndrome. Fibers in the diverticulitis diet, such as wheat bran will retin much of the water content and will produce a more bulky and soft stool which helps in decreasing the pressure in the sigmoid and the rest of the bowel. There are other bulking agents available under names such as methycellulose and psyllium which can also be used in a good diverticulitis diet. |
