Diverticulitis

The colon circulates around the inside of the abdomen and it ends in the rectum. This is where the sigmoid bit is located. Sigmoid means S-shape and this is the s-shaped bit of the colon just before the rectum. Liquid stool flows through the colon system and the liquid is removed, recycled back to the body and the end product is normal stool, eventually held in the rectum until next bowel movement. A healthy colon during a healthy diet will be able to perform its own colon clense.

The sigmoid colon is a very specialized piece of equipment, it works under high pressure to control stool movement from the colon to the rectum. It is in this extreme environment of high pressure the risk of diverticuli (pocket) occurance is the largest - known as sigmoid diverdiculosis.

Sigmoid diverticulosis, means "pockets in the sigmoid colon". These pockets will slowly develop over long time in places where the surrounding colon wall is weaker. Diverdiculosis can appear anywhere in the colon system but since the sigmoid colon is the part with the highest pressure - this is also where the most cases of sigmoid diverticulosis are found.

The effect of sigmoid diverticulosis, or pockets in the sigmoid colon, can be that bowel functions start to change, resulting in diarrhea, constipation or discomfort in general. This in turn can of course lead to secondary diseases like hemorrhoids (hemroids).

Diverticulitis is when the "pockets" gets infected due to colon bacteria leaking out through the thinner wall. When this happens, it becomes necessary with diverticulitis treatment and colon cleanse etc (preventive methods) are no longer enough.
