especially in the high pressure sigmoid part, the condition is called sigmoid diverticulosis. If the diverticuli (pockets) from the sigmoid diverticulosis become infected due to colon bacteria leaking through, the condition is instead called diverticulitis. Sigmoid diverticulosisIncreased pressure in the colonic system also contributes to the risk of getting sigmoid diverticulosis (diverticulitis). This pressure can be due to long term constipation, heavy lifting, pregnancy etc. Diverticulosis is fairly common and equally distributed between men and women. Since diverticulosis takes a very long time to develop, most patients diagnosed with diverticulosis are middle-aged or older. It is estimated that around 50% or more of the American population above 60 has got sigmoid diverticulosis. In most cases, the diverticulosis will not need any treatment but if diverticulitis has developed as a complication (this is when the "pockets" become infected), treatment is necessary. A simple way of preventing diverticulosis and subsequent diverticulitis is to use a high fiber diet (known as a diverticulitis diet) and to use colon cleansing regularly, if possible dual action cleanse. |
