Sigmoid diverticulosis

The disease - or rather condition - diverticulosis affects males and females to approximately the same extent. As it takes a long time to develop, most diverticulosis patients are in their middle ages or above.

It is estimated that about 1 in 2 of the entire western population has some level of diverticulosis, while in the developing countries in Africa and Asia, the levels are much lower. This is probably due to the higher proportion of unprocessed, fiber rich food in these countries. The rate of diverticulosis have trebled over the last 25-30 years in the western world which is a good measure of the health effects of junk food, processed food, saturated fats etc.

Sigmoid diverticulosis is when small pockets are formed, mainly in the colon. These pockets are like small balloons expanding out through the colon wall where it is weaker (the naturally weak spots). This process is more obvious of course the higher the pressure so it is no surprise that 80% of these ballooons are formed in the sigmoid part of the colon, which is a highly specialised s-shaped part working under high pressure to achieve the proper bowel movement. Hence the name of the condition - sigmoid diverticulosis.

In most cases sigmoid diverticulosis is fairly benign and will not require any treatment. In fact most elderly people have diverticulosis to some extent without even knowing it. When complications of the diverticulosis condition occur, the most common being diverticulitis - or inflammation of the "balloons" - it can become very obvious (pains, diarrhea etc) and medical treatment becomes necessary. Usually antibiotics plus a strict diet.
